LESSON 9: "Student Proposal," T-Shirt Design, Screen Printing on Textiles
Description:
For the final project of the semester students will propose an original T-Shirt design that is inspired by the world around them. The multi-layer/multi-color screen print design should aim to communicate a message to or about Nature, Social/Political Issues, Advertizing, or Urban Locales. Each student will complete a proposal packet explaining their inspiration and intentions, outline the steps to accomplish the project, as well as a reflection on what they learned from the previous lessons that will help them be successful on this assignment.

Materials and Preparations:

Objectives:
- Students will create an original design that is visually interesting, challenging to their skill level and school appropriate.
- Students will create final prints on paper and at least one “perfect” or best print on a T-shirt (provided by the student).

Materials and Preparations:
- Styrofoam or cardboard pieces (to separate layers of the shirt and prevent ink bleeds)
- Hairdryers
- Masking tape (You will need a LOT!)
- Magazine or catalogue pages folded into vertical strips (for masking off the edges of the screen)
- Water-based textile screen printing inks (put into plastic squeeze bottles)
- Squeegees
- Old towels for drying screens
- Photo emulsion
- Exposure units
- “Dark” room for emulsion application and exposure
- Black trash bags
- Paper and newsprint for practice prints
- Transparencies and Black and White photocopier
- Sharpies
- Light boxes (for tracing multiple layers)
